Member Interview with Richard Boon

We are delighted to bring you a Member Interview with Richard Boon, CEO & Co-founder of OH SIX

What’s your golden rule?

Treat people how you wish to be treated

Who has been your biggest influence?

My Dad, he brought me up on values and qualities that I aspire to uphold today. Fairness, trust, honesty, "enough" (not being greedy, but avoiding waste to leave enough share with others), patience, accepting everyone equally and upholding high standards to achieve. It's been a great framework as a leader.

What is your most hated business expression?

"Just" - it weaponises oversimplification

What’s the smartest business idea you’ve ever had?

My missed opportunity was bespoke merchandise and cards/albums using web-to-print generated by images uploaded to social media back in 2008, pre Moonpig! My smartest idea was Co-founding OH SIX agency to deliver creative digital and video content so we can help brands navigate a more social first approach to activate their audiences, partnerships and sporting sponsorships.

Which leader do you admire most and why?

Tamara Littleton of Social Element - she is authentic, true to her word and I've not come across too many Leaders that live up to expectations or their PR/speeches/comments/books. I admire her ability to give honest advice and commit to a long term vision.

What keeps you up at night as a marketing leader?

Letting somebody down. Running a business means lots of moving pieces and marketing runs at an extremely fast paced cycle now. No matter how much AI and tech processes you put in place, things go wrong and it's human-to-human relations that fix it.

Why is being part of The Marketing Society important for your career?

I like to hear the cutting edge working examples of Marketing and connect with those bold and brave enough to invest in what's next. I've found the member conversations to be stimulating at every event, which has helped me continue to learn as my career adjusts

Why does marketing matter to you?

It influences, inspires and captures attention. It's always rewarding to see our work out there, whether that digital out of home when catching the train out of London or social content shared by a major brand/sports team, you feel proud you have played a part in a global moment that people engage with.

Tell us something that’s not on your CV

I got my presenting skills from stage presence as a bass guitarist performing in a few bands, which then gave me the confidence to pitch on stage in a "Dragon's Den" pilot with Peter Jones back when I was 17-18 years old.
