Member Interview with Liz Dean

We are delighted to bring you a Member Interview with Liz Dean, Founder, Marketing consultant and Coach, The Leopard Room

What’s your golden rule?

"Treat others as you want to be treated". And to quote Audrey Hepburn "Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I'm possible."

Who has been your biggest influence?

My family's unwavering love and support to travel my own career path has been my biggest influence on my life and career. Whether it's sounding me out on an idea, listening to me chat about what excited me at work or in my day, or even proof reading my CV or something I'm working hard on, they're on hand to support me in any way, shape or form that they can (and give a bit of an outside to marketing perspective).

What is your most hated business expression?

Let's circle back...(how about we keep moving forward?)

What’s the smartest business idea you’ve ever had?

Setting up a cupcake business in lockdown. No travel time meant time for baking before and after work, and everyone locally wanted a pick me up to cheer them up and what better way than homemade cake!? New skill unlocked in cupcake decorating and making drip cakes too, as well as lots of learnings as a start-up business!

Which leader do you admire most and why?

Whitney Wolfe Herd, Founder and CEO of Bumble - for standing up for what's right and not accepting sexual harassment or discrimination in the workplace, for starting a company based on a very personal experience that it relatable to lots of women, plus all the initiatives that have been set up at Bumble since.

What keeps you up at night as a marketing leader?

How do I keep (and stay) ahead in marketing with the ever-changing marketing and business landscape with the right skills, the right experience and the right network. How do you know if it's a trend or fad, and if it's worth giving any airtime to, and if we need to change the strategic approach or keep going with the current plan.

Why is being part of The Marketing Society important for your career?

Following on from roles at Currys, Homebase, CityFibre,The Marketing Society has been transformational to my career. Not only was I successful in the Marketing Leaders Programme for 2024 where I built long-lasting connections and learnt about the Future, Deliver, Engage philosophy, I am also an active member participating in the events online and in person - it's been amazing to connect to and meet smart, clever, inspirational people who are all contributing to the Marketing World in their own unique way.

Why does marketing matter to you?

Marketing is the glue that brings all the departments in a business together, making decisions for what is best for the customer based on the customer needs and wants. The future needs and wants are where the commercial growth is at and how businesses grow so marketing is the engine that makes this happen. The blend of Commerciality and Creativity in marketing is wonderfully exciting, and there are some brilliant minds tackling this, and having to adapt to an ever-changing environment.

Tell us something that’s not on your CV

My favourite job in the world is being an auntie to my nephew; negotiation skills, team work, fun, creativity, critical thinking, when the small stuff is the big stuff.
