We are delighted to bring you a Member Interview with Charli Wright, CEO, JWI
What’s your golden rule?
Solve the problem, not the brief. Too often we jump straight to solving what's on the page instead of asking the questions that uncover the real problem. That's where the best ideas usually begin.
Who has been your biggest influence?
My first ever manager - for all the wrong reasons! Watching how they treated people made me realize you don't have to choose between high standards and kindness, and I've tried to build JWI around that ever since.
What is your most hated business expression?
‘Best practice.’ Too often it feels like a cop-out. Marketing should challenge thinking, not just repeat it. Today's best practice only exists because someone was once willing to do something differently.
What’s the smartest business idea you’ve ever had?
Having the confidence to say no. Every time we've protected our standards - whether that's saying no to work that compromises strategy or behaviors that don't reflect our culture - the business has come out stronger.
What leader do you admire most and why?
Less a single famous name, more a quality: leaders who stay calm and clear when everything around them isn't. The people I admire most hold their nerve under pressure, make hard calls and still bring everyone with them. Having seen the opposite early in my career, I know how rare (and how deliberate!) that steadiness is.
What is on your mind the most right now as a marketing leader?
I'm increasingly concerned we're losing the fundamentals of marketing. As channels have become easier to access and execution easier to automate, I worry we're spending more time becoming experts in communications than marketing strategy - and what actually drives growth is being deprioritized.
Why is being part of The Marketing Society important for your career?
What I value most is being surrounded by people who genuinely care about the craft of marketing. It's refreshing to be part of a community that still debates the thinking behind the work, not just the latest tool or trend.
Why does marketing matter to you?
Marketing has been the one constant throughout my life - from school, to university, to building JWI. I love that it sits at the intersection of business, creativity and human behavior. I genuinely can't imagine doing anything else.
Tell us something that’s not on your CV
People assume I'm quite easy-going but I'm actually relentlessly competitive. Not necessarily with other people but more with myself. I’m always asking, “how can I make this even better?” Much to the frustration of my team (and husband!).
