We are delighted to bring you a Fellows interview with Emma Harris Founder and Chief Executive at Glow London.
The Marketing Society Fellowship is our highest and most prestigious accolade awarded to outstanding marketing leaders who have achieved significant success in the markets they’ve worked in and made an active contribution to The Marketing Society and our industry more broadly.
What is your golden rule?
Work out what really matters and prioritise it.
Who has been your biggest influence?
Can I have 2? Keith Hatter, Founder of PlanetK2 and Sherilyn Shackell. Both have always encouraged me be to be completely and utterly unapologetically me.
What is your most hated business expression?
I am completely allergic to the word "staff". My clients are banned from using it. People, team, even employees is acceptable but "staff"... Ewwww! So hierarchical.
What’s the smartest business idea you’ve ever had?
To launch a business that connects brand and culture - most brand agencies stop at the colouring in but when I was a client the work really went in to seeding the brand internally.
Which leader do you admire most and why?
Cheryl Calverley - because she's stepped out of the corporate world to do something that really matters.
What keeps you up at night as a marketing leader?
The fact that data and technology is driving a truck through how marketing is done and sadly that means marketing is losing its seat at the table to the likes of the CTO or CIO.
Why is being part of The Marketing Society important for your career?
For me The Marketing Society is family. When I jumped out of my corporate job it kept me at the table - kept me relevant and informed. I have met so many amazing people, been inspired and supported and honestly wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't joined.
Why does marketing matter to you?
Because we own the narrative to culture in many ways and we can really make a difference - both positive and negative.
What does the word impact mean to you when it comes to marketing?
Changing behaviour.
Tell us something that’s not on your CV
I have 4 kids and am married to actor Danny Sapani. Our kids range from 23 to 7 so we have sex, drugs and nursery rhymes all in one place. Our life is bonkers. And wonderful.
