Sir Charlie Mayfield delivered our Annual Lecture this year on 19 March, editor of the Society Elen Lewis interviewed him ahead of his appearance.

What did the army teach you about running the JL partnership?
Working with lots of different people. Communication.  Team-working.

What's the biggest challenge facing you this year?
Continuing shift in operating model and balancing that with continuing ops.

How would your PA describe you?
Patient, dynamic and inspirational.

What keeps you awake at night?
I sleep pretty well, but if anything it is IT!

What's your guilty pleasure?
Good Burgundy and walking up mountains.

What does a bold marketing leader look like?
Much like a good business leader. Customer focused, long term, commercial.

What advice would you offer to a marketer starting out today?
See your role as a director of the business rather than the source of creative.

What advice would you give your 17-year-old self?
Focus more on others and less on yourself.
