Our Week 10 August

Sir Martin Sorrell

Sorrell's secret

It’s just a few months until Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO of WPP, the world’s largest advertising and marketing services group, speaks at our Annual Conference. We suspect he has much to say about world class performance. Elen Lewis asked him if there is a secret to growing a business globally. ‘A clear strategy – well executed – but you need both, not, as some advise, simply execution.’ Let’s look forward to hearing more on 28 November.

Label makers

Do you think third party labels, such as Fairtrade, MSC, or FSC, can help build brands? If so, how? These are the root questions of a new research project by GreenBabel which needs your thoughts as senior marketers. The aim is to have real input in the development of these labels on behalf of the marketing world. All we need is 10 minutes of your time to complete this survey. You might even win £50 in John Lewis vouchers while you’re there.

Award Winners on the road

Our Awards for Excellence Road Show in September will show off distinctive case studies from the 2012 awards. It’s your chance to soak up insight and inspiration for your own work. We have several case studies on our blog, including John Lewis, ASOS, Foster’s and Dr Pepper. Have a read, come along to the road show in Birmingham, London or Manchester, and be inspired for the 2013 awards. Could you be the star of next year’s road show?

Stop asking why

In the gym this week, find a practical workshop with Wendy Gordon, co-founder of Acacia Avenue and a behavioural economics expert. Looking at an interesting experiment involving jam, Wendy shows how over-thinking ‘reasons why’ can interfere with consumers’ judgement. Hit the gym to learn more. And see this video in which Wendy introduces the main principles of behavioural economics.

Watch the challengers

We’ve been collecting some great videos from The Challenger Project, and they’re all online for you to watch. Among them we have Tim Wright, commercial director, King of Shaves, talking about ‘The Feisty Underdog’, and Perry Haydn Taylor, founder and creative director of design consultancy Big Fish, giving his perspective on how to build brands without advertising.
