Let’s face it, Bangkok has a bad rep of being a party city with an infamous red light district. I’m not going to deny that these are certainly elements of BKK. But that’s all they are, small elements of a complex modern city bursting with culture and creativity.
Thailand is the only country in the region never to be colonised by Europe and this is reflected in how well its ancient arts and culture have been preserved. Amongst this sprawling metropolis of space-age shopping malls and skyscrapers are magnificent temples adorned with thousand-year-old Buddhas and intricate paintings that depict the story of Ramayana.
Best hotel for business?
The Okura Prestige: Treats include panoramic views of the city and Japanese style electronic toilets with all the bells and whistles. Head up to the infinity pool on the roof for an unforgettable dip - though not for the faint-of-heart.
Best hotel for pleasure?
The Eugenia: From the moment their vintage Bentley collects you from the airport to the brief second that it takes to fall asleep in your majestic four poster bed, The Eugenia immerses you in a charmingly colonial atmosphere unlike no other.
Best bar for celebrating?
Enter Maggie Choo’s and you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve travelled back in time to 1930’s Shanghai. This contemporary speakeasy, with ladies lounging in vintage cheongsams atop a grand piano, has international musicians entertaining the crowd with live jazz music.
Best bar for a business drink?
The Speakeasy Rooftop Bar @ The Hotel Muse. This bar has everything; fantastic views, quality cocktails and unique decor. Head there for sunset drinks to get the best experience.
Best restaurant for a business lunch?
Namsaah Bottling Trust offers something a little more creative than the usual dining spots in BKK. It’s set in a bright pink house and is decorated with Thai materials in vivid colours. The creativity is extended to its eclectic take on a traditional Thai menu, which has been designed by celebrity chef Ian Kittichai.
How to spend an hour in-between meetings?
Massage in Thailand offers unparalleled bang for your baht. Healthland Spa has locations all over the city and is well respected by locals and expats alike for providing an authentic Thai experience.
If you only have time to do one thing in my city, do this...
Talad Rot Fai (train market). Bangkok has some of the best markets in the world but this relatively new and growing market, is a real treat. A much loved night bazaar amongst locals and tourists beaming with bohemian charm. A great place to spend an evening perusing antique furniture, vintage clothing and kitsch collectibles.
