Member Interview with Jessy Thomas

We are delighted to bring you a Member Interview with Jessy Thomas, Brand Strategist at Mer.cury Creative

What’s your golden rule?

Leads can come from any conversation and be so open. I ensure I do at least 3 meetings a week and have conversations:)

Who has been your biggest influence?

I have a few, to be honest. In marketing, I think Seth Godin - I am loosely referred to as “the purple cow” as I totally believing in standing out and so everything I do must stand out.

What is your most hated business expression?

I think it has to be - “ we are opening this brief to a tender… then I know it is usually a quote gathering exercise and the quote will be awarded on the basis of price and not concepts…:

What’s the smartest business idea you’ve ever had?

Cleverly using direct marketing in some really cool ways - which has led to increased awareness and revenue. I had a client who wanted to push their range of products that were not selling. The direct marketing tool that was developed addressed that with their sales shooting up. All my direct marketing end results must meet 3 criteria : 1) It MUST be different and stand out and be talked about 2) It MUST relate with what I do and 3) it will NEVER be thrown away like most direct marketing ideas because they are too common.

Which leader do you admire most and why?

Steven Bartlett - I love his work ethic and platforms - his episodes on Diary of a CEO have many interesting takeaways.

What keeps you up at night as a marketing leader?

The ease at which shortcuts are accepted

Why is being part of The Marketing Society important for your career?

TMS is a great platform for learning, collaborating and networking. Your access to some of the sharpest minds in the industry is remarkable. Why wouldn’t you join?

Why does marketing matter to you?

For me personally, it’s been the thrill that comes with seeing a mere idea come to life and having an impact in many ways. I love the journey to get there - and when done right, it is really rewarding!

Tell us something that’s not on your CV

I’ve written a one of a kind children’s book with its unique illustrations - It’s a book that simply explains adoption. The book is targeted to parents of children who are adopted and the story helps in explaining how truly special the adoptee is.
