Member Interview with Becky McKinlay

We are delighted to bring you a Member Interview with Becky McKinlay, Managing Director, Oystercatchers

What’s your golden rule?

Give people a good reputation to live up to.

Who has been your biggest influence?

My aunt - an original female trailblazer. A strong willed, well-read woman who was ahead of her time in many ways.  Her smile lit up rooms and she drew people of all generations to her. She served in WAF, was a juvenile magistrate, and was our extended family's glue. Her letter writing art lives on her as her legacy.

What is your most hated business expression?

Top to top meetings.

What’s the smartest business idea you’ve ever had?

To build my business around a low in fat, high in protein structure.

Which leader do you admire most and why?

Rosaleen Blair CBE.  Co-founder and Chair of AMS and a serial entrepreneur, mentor and trustee. Low ego, high energy, extraordinary resilience and investor in female-led businesses.

What is on your mind the most right now as a marketing leader?

How we avoid marketing becoming or being seen as a commodity. Speaking the language of the boardroom while inspiring innovation and ambition. Demonstrating how creativity can help solve business problems, not just saying it.

Why is being part of The Marketing Society important for your career?

I get my energy and inspiration from the company I keep.  Being part of a diverse group of risk takers,  thought provokers, industry titans and challengers can only help improve my knowledge, insight and impact.

Why does marketing matter to you?

Marketing has been part of my life, before I even started thinking about what I might do to pay the bills that come with adulthood. I've worked in agencies, as a client, within in house studios - its an industry that has provided me with inspiration, access to places and people I would never had otherwise and life long friendships.

Tell us something that’s not on your CV

I'm related to Jane Austen.
