We chat with The Marketing Society Awards judge Martin George to find out the importance of recognising marketing excellence.
Martin is Customer Director at Waitrose, and looks after all aspects of marketing and customer relations.
Why is recognizing marketing excellence through the Society’s awards so important for the industry?
Marketing excellence is key to growth and inspiring both customers and colleagues. After the challenging year we’ve all encountered, it’s never been more important.
What advice would you offer brands entering our awards to make their entry stand out?
Be original. Keep your entry focused. And remember to describe how you influenced the way that your customers think, feel or behave.
What’s your golden rule?
A former boss once told me that whoever has the gold makes the rules, which I like. But my actual golden rule is to never forget that customers pay your salary.
Who has been your biggest influence?
Lord Colin Marshall, who was Chairman at BA, taught me me that if you look after your people, they will look after your customers.
What is your most hated business expression?
Right now it’s....’sorry, I was on mute’.
What inspires or motivates you every day to do what you do?
Working for a business with a unwavering sense of purpose.
2021 entries are now open. Find out more about how you can enter The Marketing Society Awards here.
