Fellows interview with Rebecca Dibb-Simkin

We are delighted to bring you a Fellows interview with Rebecca Dibb-Simkin Chief Marketing & Product Officer at Octopus Energy Group.

The Marketing Society Fellowship is our highest and most prestigious accolade awarded to outstanding marketing leaders who have achieved significant success in the markets they’ve worked in and made an active contribution to The Marketing Society and our industry more broadly.

What is your golden rule?

Don't regret anything - you made the decision with everything you had at the time

Who has been your biggest influence?

PROBABLY my mum - a professor of marketing and one of the world's leading experts in buyer behaviour....turns out some stuff may be genetic...

What is your most hated business expression?

Proposition - I still don't really understand what it means.

What’s the smartest business idea you’ve ever had?

To go and work for Octopus Energy (or a business which wouldn't make me create another brand pyramid ever again, and just enable me to focus on creating great stuff which humans wanted).

Which leader do you admire most and why?

My boss, Greg Jackson. Always and forever one step ahead.

What keeps you up at night as a marketing leader?

Doomscrolling LinkedIn - other than that, I'm generally pretty knackered and sleep well.

Why is being part of The Marketing Society important for your career?

Because Sophie is fabulous - and I realised that the people she knows are pretty fabulous too.

What does the word impact mean to you when it comes to marketing?

I'm not very good at these, so I asked Chat GPT and he said: "In marketing, "impact" refers to the measurable effect a campaign or strategy has on an audience or a business's objectives." Which actually isn't half bad. My job at Octopus is to make our rocket ship go faster - everything I do is in pursuit of that goal.

Tell us something that’s not on your CV

I was going to be an accountant, and am still weirdly happy in a spreadsheet.
