The Science of Storytelling

Marketers, it’s often said, are in the business of storytelling but rarely do we stop to think and understand why this skill is so useful to us as humans, as marketers and in business – and the rules that go with it.

Lead by Kevin Chesters, in this work shop you’ll discover that whatever your business - b2b, b2c brand, a start-up or big brand, big budget or a tiny – you need to identify the story to tell; a story that is simple, compelling and distinct that’ll make it stand out from the crowd.

Kevin spoke to an eclectic mix of people for his research including a vicar, a film director, a documentary maker, a quilter, a sculptress, a restaurateur and a children’s author, people who build and tell stories as part of their profession. To his surprise he discovered something curious - the output might change, but the basic rules remain the same. 

In this session you’ll learn how to understand the story of your brand, business or products, the rules to create their story and how to make that story resonate with your customers.

This session will cover the following:

  • What is a story?  Why do we tell them as humans and why do we tell them as marketers?
  • Learning from storytellers using research from film directors, documentary makers, teacher, artists and a vicar
  • Behaviours that will enhance your creativity and storytelling
  • A practical task on how to tell better stories - the High Concept
  • What to read and watch to get better at storytelling

More about Kevin Chesters

Kevin Chesters has 25+ years’ experience leading strategy on both agency and client-side. He is a former CSO of W+K London, Dentsu mcgarrybowen and Ogilvy. He was also the Head of Strategy at British Telecom. He is a prolific industry commentator and trainer; and also lectures at four UK universities on creativity and storytelling. His first book, ‘The Creative Nudge’ was an Amazon best-seller. He now runs his own strategic consultancy with a small group of select clients.
