There are many books on both marketing strategy and managing your career. This one is particularly helpful, because it comes from the perspective of a practitioner who has spent over 50 years in marketing and management, and has captured their insights on what behaviours bring success.
James Espey has worked in global marketing and leadership roles, and was responsible for the launch of brands such as Malibu, Johnny Walker Blue and Chivas Regal 18. He has also held positions as Head of United Distillers, North America and Chairman of Chivas Brothers. This book is different in that it is not based on academia, but real world practical experience and advice.
These the tips are not from the latest HBR strategic article, they are instead pragmatic messages on topics like how to handle the new boss, general curtesy for your colleagues and managing your way through office politics. Factors which are probably far more critical for most to do well in the workforce.
As the book progresses, James Espey dispenses more of his advice on how to build brands, and how to lead a good organisation. He focuses on areas such as the importance of, and how to foster innovative and trusting environments. He has great insight on how to manage your career, and the challenges you are likely to face as you progress. The book tackles important personal topics, such as tips to help you remember your values and discusses about why it’s important to hang on to these. Then finally, how to equip yourself best for the next chapter; for example dealing with redundancy, retirement or starting your own business.
Making your Marque is refreshing and honest. While it may not be critical reading for those looking for thoughts on advanced marketing strategy, it is a great guide for anybody starting out in the corporate world, or as a pertinent reminder for those of in the middle of their careers what to be mindful of.
